We grind stumps below grade quickly and cleanly, without chemicals or lengthy waiting periods. Most stumps are done in under an hour.

Why Stumps Are a Problem

Homeowners often leave stumps thinking they’ll deal with them later — but stumps cause real issues that tend to get worse over time:

  • Tripping hazard — A half-buried stump in your yard is easy to miss, especially in tall grass. Kids, guests, and you are all at risk of a nasty fall.
  • Pest magnet — Rotting stumps attract termites, carpenter ants, beetles, and other wood-boring insects. Once they’ve colonized a stump, they can spread to your home.
  • Regrowth — Many species — especially silver maple, tree-of-heaven, and elm — will send up new shoots from a cut stump for years. Controlling this regrowth by mowing around the stump is an endless battle.
  • Lawn maintenance headaches — Mowing around a stump is annoying at best and damaging to your mower at worst. Grinding eliminates the obstacle entirely.
  • Eyesore — A dead stump in the middle of an otherwise clean yard drags down the look of your whole property.

Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal

We offer both approaches, but grinding is what most homeowners need:

Stump grinding uses a powerful rotating cutting wheel to chew the stump and surface roots down 6 to 12 inches below grade. What remains is a hole filled with wood chips and loose soil — well below where you’d mow or plant grass. The roots left in the ground will naturally decay over time and present no ongoing issues for typical residential use.

Full stump removal means pulling the entire root ball out of the ground — stump, tap root, and all. This is a much more invasive process that leaves a large hole and disturbs significantly more of the surrounding soil. We recommend it primarily for situations where you’re about to build on that exact spot or when the root system is causing an active problem (like cracking a foundation).

For the vast majority of residential and commercial stump jobs, grinding is the right choice — it’s faster, less disruptive, and more affordable.

What Stump Grinding Looks Like

Here’s what happens on a stump grinding job:

  1. We assess the stump — size, wood type, proximity to structures, and any surface roots to address.
  2. We bring in our stump grinder and work the stump down 6 to 12 inches below ground level.
  3. We grind any major surface roots that are tripping hazards or affecting lawn maintenance.
  4. The resulting hole is filled with the wood chip mulch created during grinding.
  5. You can top it with topsoil and reseed grass, or leave the wood chips to break down naturally.

We clean up before we leave. All debris stays on-site as fill unless you’d prefer we haul it — just ask.

What Does Stump Grinding Cost in Toledo?

Stump grinding in Toledo typically runs $100 to $450 per stump, depending on:

  • Stump diameter — The larger the stump, the more time and machine hours required.
  • Wood hardness — Oak, locust, and other hardwoods take longer to grind than softer species.
  • Root flare — A stump with wide, flat root flares at the surface takes more work than a clean, narrow base.
  • Accessibility — If our machine can drive right up to the stump, the job goes fast. If we have to work around fencing, landscaping, or tight spaces, it takes longer.

Multiple stump discount: If you have several stumps to grind, we typically discount the per-stump price. Let us know upfront how many you have.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stump Grinding

Can I plant a new tree after stump grinding? Yes — but wait a few months first. The wood chips and decomposing root material left in the ground can tie up nitrogen as they break down, which isn’t ideal for new plant roots. After 3 to 6 months, remove the remaining chips, add fresh topsoil, and plant normally. If you’re in a hurry, let us know and we can discuss options.

How deep do you grind? We grind 6 to 12 inches below grade as standard. That’s well past lawn-mowing depth and sufficient for grass re-establishment. If you need deeper grinding for a specific purpose, we can discuss it.

What do you do with the wood chips? The chips stay on-site by default — they fill the hole left by grinding and work as natural mulch that breaks down over time. If you’d prefer them removed, we can haul them for an additional fee. Some customers actually want extra chips for garden beds, which we’re happy to accommodate.

Will the roots rot on their own? Yes. Once the stump is ground away, the remaining roots have no way to photosynthesize or sustain themselves. They’ll break down naturally over several years. You won’t notice the process above ground — grass grows right over them.

What if the stump is very close to my house or fence? We can work close to structures with our equipment — we do it regularly. We’ll assess the situation during our estimate and let you know if there are any concerns.
