The roots left behind will decay naturally over time. This isn’t a problem for typical residential use. Grass grows right over the chip-filled hole once you top it with fresh topsoil. The underground roots pose no structural risk and won’t cause surface problems.
Full Stump Removal: What It Is
Full stump removal means pulling the entire root ball out of the ground — stump, tap root, and a significant portion of the lateral roots. This requires heavier equipment (often an excavator or large stump puller), leaves a substantially larger hole, and disturbs much more of the surrounding soil and landscaping.
The upside: there’s nothing left underground. If you need to build on that exact spot — a foundation, a retaining wall, a concrete pad — full removal eliminates any concern about subsurface root material interfering.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
Choose stump grinding if:
- You want the stump gone and the area usable (lawn, garden bed, landscaping)
- You’re replanting grass or installing non-structural landscaping over the spot
- You want to minimize disruption to the surrounding yard
- Cost is a consideration (grinding is significantly less expensive)
Choose full removal if:
- You’re building a structure directly on or adjacent to that spot (addition, deck with footings, poured concrete)
- The root system is actively causing a problem — cracking a nearby sidewalk or driveway, threatening a foundation
- You’re installing underground irrigation or a drainage system in that area
